Passion flowers grow in tropical woodland in South America where some are pollinated by humming birds and others by bats. Usually the flowers last only a day.

Passiflora caerulea, a vigorous fruit bearing vine will withstand the British climate and grows wild in Spain. The granadilla fruit is from P.ligularis. Native Americans and early settlers used the leaves of P.incarnata for insomnia, hysteria and epilepsy.
