Livia Firth talks to Lucy Siegle at the V&A - "Can Fashion Change the World?"
photo Jane Anashka/Save me I'm Wild
For an hour before the talk I found myself wandering half lost through the vaulted galleries of the V&A, down corridors of history to the Mughals of India and to ancient China, eras when people felled small clearings of trees in a largely forested world to feed themselves and travelled on foot or by horseback. As Livia Firth talked about the devastating effects of 'fast fashion' on the environment and the people who work and died in the sweatshops of Bangladesh it was clear that our forest clearings have become so vast we are on the verge of sweeping away most of the natural world upon which all life depends.
Livia Firth and Lucy Siegle, who writes a weekly column for The Observer, started The Green Carpet Challenge to promote ethical behaviour in the fashion industry. One of their success stories was persuading cattle ranchers in Brazil to stop cutting down the Amazon rainforest to grow grass for their cattle in exchange for the higher prices paid for ethically sourced leather. They also persuaded some of the top designers to bring out collections using fabrics made from recycled materials such as plastic bottles and discarded underwear. Livia admitted to wearing the same Primark nightdress for 30 years and said we should repair our clothes rather than throwing them away. The challenge was to source fabrics that had been ethically and sustainably produced without compromising on the aesthetics of design. As the demand for sustainably produced clothes increases so the price would come down, as is now happening with organic food.

Celebrating Fauna & Flora International's 110th Anniversary
photo John Cowie/Save me I'm Wild
Last night my partner John and I attended the AGM of Fauna & Flora International who were celebrating their 110th anniversary at the Royal Geographical Society.
The highlight of the event, attended by 700 supporters, was BBC Radio 4's Libby Purves interviewing Sir David Attenborough, vice-president and member of FFI for 60 years.
He said that his personal view on conservation, was that as stewards of the planet we should protect biodiversity as a whole – not only the parts that were of potential benefit to people. Both of us were heartened to hear him mention that the basic requirement of all conservation is the preservation of habitats. Plants transmit through photosynthesis the sun’s energy, the basis of all life on earth.
We saw two videos of FFI’s conservation work involving local communities – some times converting poachers to become game-wardens, and the teaching of conservation in schools to provide leaders for the next generation.
